The German Shepherd requires daily interaction with its pack and its environment.
This dog needs stimulation, both physical and mental. He cannot stand boredom, prolonged solitude, or the passivity of his environment. He requires time, consistency, and commitment. He is not made to stay alone in a garden or to be walked once in the evening after a day of absence.
There are therefore two (cumulative) possibilities to offer him a decent life:
- The first is to make him your partner, if he follows you in your activities, if you allow him to exercise, to be in daily contact with nature, then he can even live in an apartment.
Man-dog duo
- If you plan to let him roam freely in the garden (for example, to guard him) or to be left to his own devices for a large part of the time, then you absolutely must consider having him live with at least one other member of the opposite sex. This does not, of course, exempt or prevent you from developing close and affectionate contact with them.
The dog is a pack animal
The dog is an animal gregarious, of pack, he needs permanent interaction with the latter, human or animal, he can suffer from loneliness and then develop behavioral disorders.
