{"id":256,"date":"2025-04-25T13:46:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T13:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/?page_id=256"},"modified":"2025-07-18T09:43:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T09:43:17","slug":"maladies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/en\/sante\/maladies\/","title":{"rendered":"Genetic diseases detected in German Shepherds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 31\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_375\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-375\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-375 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-3-17.08.21.jpg\" alt=\"Maladies g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques d\u00e9pist\u00e9es chez le Berger Allemand\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DNA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Recent scientific discoveries make it possible to determine whether a dog is disease-free, a healthy carrier, or affected by a disease, based on the presence or absence of a specific mutation on one or two alleles of the gene concerned.<\/p>\n<p>This is why the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrale-canine.fr\/lofselect\/articles\/berger-allemand-sante-et-selection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Canine Society (SCC)<\/a>, in conjunction with breed clubs, recommends screening for certain hereditary diseases in breeders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are the conditions tested:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022 Degenerative myelopathy type A (DM): neurological disease affecting the spinal cord, transmitted by mutation of the SOD1 gene.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Hyperuricosuria (HUU): metabolic disease predisposing to urinary stones.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 X-linked ectodermal dysplasia (XHED): a disease affecting the skin and coat, with specific sex-linked inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Rare disorders under surveillance such as mucopolysaccharidosis VII, hemophilia A or Scott syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 MPS-VII (mucopolysaccharidosis VII): a rare genetic disease affecting metabolism, leading to the accumulation of complex sugars in cells, causing skeletal, cardiac and neurological disorders in dogs.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 HEMA-1 and HEMA-2 (hemophilia A): inherited blood clotting disorders linked to the X chromosome, causing prolonged bleeding even after minor injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 CSS (Scott syndrome): genetic disease of the immune system characterized by an abnormality in platelet adhesion, leading to coagulation disorders similar to those observed in hemophilia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Impact on reproduction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A dog&#039;s genetic status has important consequences on mating choices:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 32\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022 An unaffected dog can be bred without restriction- <strong>1.1 or NN.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 A healthy carrier dog (heterozygous for a recessive mutation) can be bred, but only with an unaffected dog to avoid producing diseased puppies. <strong>1.2 or NM<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 An affected dog (homozygous mutated) should not be used for breeding as part of a responsible selection policy. \u2013<strong> 2.2 or MM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-441 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/images-1.jpg\" alt=\"Transmission \u00e0 la descendance des maladies g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques par accouplement\" width=\"194\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Transmission of genetic diseases to offspring through mating<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>This system allows for the gradual elimination of deleterious mutations while preserving the genetic diversity of breeds.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 33\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"continue-button\" style=\"display: inline-block;
