It results in abnormal joint development, causing laxity (instability) and, ultimately, premature wear of the joint cartilage and osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-367\" src=\"https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-1-17.08.21.jpg\" alt=\"Dysplasie chez le Berger Allemand\" width=\"375\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 28\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Symptoms can vary: lameness, stiffness, difficulty getting up, loss of desire to play or run. However, some dogs with severe dysplasia may be asymptomatic for a long time.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dysplasie_hereditaire_ou_environnementale\"><\/span>Dysplasia: hereditary or environmental?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-371 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-2-17.08.21-300x136.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-2-17.08.21-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-2-17.08.21.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bone growth in puppies and the importance of preventing ligament hyperlaxity<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to popular belief, <strong>Dysplasia is not only a genetic problem and therefore hereditary.<\/strong> Veterinary studies, including those relayed by the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Centrale Canine, show that <strong>only 23 to 25 % cases would have a strictly hereditary origin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The development of dysplasia depends on a complex interaction between genetics, epigenetic factors, and the environment. Poor nutrition, maternal stress, a disrupted microbiota, or excessively rapid growth can alter the expression of genes responsible for joint development. In the LOF German Shepherd, most breeders are free of dysplasia for more than five generations.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prevention_et_bonnes_pratiques\"><\/span>Prevention and best practices<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Prevention begins at a very young age, even before the puppy arrives in the family:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022 Rigorous selection of breeders: at the breeding farm, only officially tested dogs free from dysplasia are used for breeding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Appropriate nutrition: Slow growth is preferable to rapid growth. Good quality food, an appropriate calcium-phosphorus ratio (see the nutrition section for more details).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Controlled weight: a puppy that is too heavy is more at risk, even with good genetics.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Reasonable physical activity: avoid long walks, rough play, repeated stairs, jumping, etc. until the end of growth (12 to 18 months).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Suitable environment: no slippery floors, no smooth tiles for growing puppies.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Le_depistage\"><\/span><strong>Screening\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 29\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Understanding Screening Result Ratings<\/p>\n<p>Official hip and elbow dysplasia screening radiographs are evaluated according to the standards of the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The ratings are used to guide breeders in their selection of breeding stock.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-365\" src=\"https:\/\/dcv-berger-allemand.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-17.08.21.jpg\" alt=\"Dysplasie chez le Berger Allemand - diff\u00e9rents stades de la dysplasie de la hanche\" width=\"323\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Examples of grading the different stages of hip dysplasia<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Hip dysplasia (HD) \u2013 letter grade:<br \/>\nHD A: No abnormalities (normal hips)<br \/>\nHD B: Very mild suspicion (still considered normal) HD C: Mild dysplasia<br \/>\nHD D: Moderate dysplasia<br \/>\nHD E: Severe dysplasia<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 30\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2013 Elbow dysplasia (ED) \u2013 notation by numbers and symbols: ED 0: No abnormality<\/p>\n<p>ED SL (Slight): Minimal anomaly (sometimes called \u201c0.5\u201d) \u2013 recognition varies depending on the country<\/p>\n<p>ED 1: Mild dysplasia ED 2: Moderate dysplasia ED 3: Severe dysplasia<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note that the overall score corresponds to the worst limb, so some dogs may have an A on one hip and a C on the other, particularly due to an accident.
